ONE OF ONLY 20 PROOF 1878 GOLD DOLLARS STRUCK

With a mintage of just 20 pieces, the 1878 is tied with the 1874 and 1875 as the lowest recorded production figure of any issue of this type made after 1858. It is likely that around 10 to 12 are known and this includes impounded examples in the Smithsonian and ANS collections.

This is an unquestionable Proof with full mirror surfaces, squared edges and an orange-peel finish not seen on early business strikes. It has not been cleaned but it does show some stray hairlines in the fields which are conducive to its assigned grade. Interestingly, the reverse is struck slightly out of alignment and I do not recall having seen this feature before on a Proof of this date.

There are no comparable auction records for this date in PR63.

At less than $10,000 this coin represents just about the rarest piece of Proof gold a collector can hope to find which is not grossly impaired or which has its Proof status in doubt.
