Only 30 Proofs were struck; an estimated 15-17 are known today.

There are not many 19th century proof coins with mintages of 30 that can be bought for a reasonable level but the 1872 gold dollar is an issue that is both very rare and still affordable. The survival rate for small size proofs of this era is around half and the reasonably few number of auction records since 2000 (a total of 16 but with many repeat offerings) supports my estimate of around half the mintage still extent.

Ths borderline Gem is bright and reflective with an absence of hairlines and good eye appeal. Two small planchet chips in the central left obverse field remove this from consideration as a Gem. There is nice contrast noted between the devices and the fields while the overall appearance is very impressive.

Interestingly, no PR64 1872 gold dollars have sold at auction since the Bowers and Merena 3/02: 104 coin that brought $6,900 in a much different market than a decade later.

As I mentioned above, Proof gold dollars from this decade are very rare and affordable; a combination which is not seen on many other types of 19th century Proof gold issues.

CAC has approved just one 1872 gold dollar in PR64 (or 64+) with none higher than this.
