The 1870-S is numismatically significant as the final gold dollar struck at the San Francisco mint. Only 3,000 were made and an estimated 125-150 are known, mostly in AU55-MS62 grades. Properly graded MS63 examples are very scarce and this date is seldom seen in grades higher.

This fresh-to-the-market coin has not been seen by collectors for over two decades. It is original and undipped with nice luster and very attractive rose and orange-gold color. It is extremely choice for the grade with just a few light scuffs in the obverse fields; the reverse is very choice and grades MS64 or finer on its own.

Only one PCGS MS63 has sold at auction since 2004. Offered as Heritage 2/13: 3916, it was not CAC approved and clearly not as choice as the present example; it realized $6,463.

A very scarce and very interesting coin which is desirable as the affordable “little cousin” of the unique 1870-S three dollar gold piece.

CAC has approved this one coin in MS63 with three finer.
