The 1865 is the third rarest gold dollar from the Philadelphia mint after the 1875 and the 1863. As with the 1863 (and to some extent the 1864) it is a date that is hardly ever seen in grades less than MS62 to MS64 and problem-free AU examples are both rare and in demand.

This fresh-to-the-market example is as original as one could hope for with deep green-gold color on the obverse; the reverse is a slightly lighter shade of yellow-gold. The surfaces show some mint-made clashmarks and there is a light old scratch in the left obverse field which does not detract.

The last auction trade for a PCGS AU58 was a non-CAC coin that sold for a low $1,553 as Teletrade 4/12: 2227. Only three AU58′s have sold at auction in over a decade.

Collectors have finally learned to appreciate the rarity of this date and this is the first affordable circulated example that I have handled in a number of years.

CAC has approved one in this grade with four finer.
