Many of the 30,700 silver dollars produced for circulation were melted and the typical survivor is apt to show signs of circulation. I believe there are around three dozen known in the various Uncirculated grades with many in the MS60 to MS62 and blast white from a recent dipping. There are, curiously, a small number of Gems known (the finest of which is the PCGS MS66 in the Legend Collection) and these may well have been saved as Assay coins.

This beautiful example was purchased by me as a raw coin and it had been off the market for many years as part of a multiple generation collection. It shows superb deep natural color with deep lilac-grey undertoned by splendid bursts of rainbow hues. The strike is razor sharp and this piece appears to be entirely unmolested; a very unusual situation for this date. There are marks seen in the right obverse field and above the eagle’s head which limit the grade but the eye appeal is off the charts for the date and grade.

The only PCGS MS63 1864 silver dollar to sell at auction in well over decade was another CAC approved piece which realized $10,575 as Heritage 7/13: 3212. It was a low-end white example which paled in comparison to the present piece.

This wonderful 1864 dollar should appeal to the Seated specialist or the Civil War collector who appreciates true originality.

CAC has approved three in this grade with 10 finer.
