The 1863 is the rarest gold dollar from Philadelphia from the standpoint of total known in all grades; rarer than even the famous ultra-low mintage 1875. I estimate that between 125 and 175 are known from the original mintage of 6,200 business strikes and this date tends to come either awful (i.e., in damaged EF) or in Gem. It is almost never seen in collector grades.

This lightly worn example is lustrous and it shows pleasing sunflower-gold hues on both sides. There is minor wear only and no marks of note save for a few ticks in the obverse fields. A small speck of dirt in the E in UNITED serves as clear identification.

In the past decade, only two problem-free AU55 1863 gold dollars have sold at auction. The only PCGS graded example, ex Heritage 10/11: 4616, realized $4,888.

With the renewed interest in rare Civil War era gold coins of all denominations, I expect this coin to receive a high degree of interest.
