From the standpoint of condition rarity, this is a highlight of the Vasquez Rocks collection. It is the only certified 1860-S dollar to ever grade MS65 and it is clearly the finest known example of this date.

The 1860-S is the most common of the Type Three San Francisco gold dollars in Uncirculated with an estimated 30-40 pieces known. When available, these tend to come in the MS60 to MS62 range and this issue is rare in properly graded MS63. PCGS has graded three examples in MS64 and, as mentioned above, just this one coin in MS65.

This is among the best San Francisco gold dollars of any date that I have personally seen and it shows a degree of vibrancy that is not often seen on these coins. The strike is totally full on both sides and the coloration, a blend of orange-gold and rich rose, is accentuated by bands of lime at the borders. The luster is thick and frosty and there are just a few minor scuffs seen on both sides.

This piece has been off the market for over six years and once it sells again, my guess is that the advanced collector of gold dollars will have to wait a lot longer than this for another chance to own a Gem 1860-S!

Ex ANR 1/06: 959, where it sold for $21,850, which remains a record auction price for the date.
