As coin collecting grew quickly in popularity, mintages for Proof gold rose accordingly and no less than 154 Proof gold dollars were made in 1860. Many of these were lost or melted and today, the number known to exist is likely around 25-30 with most of these in the PR63 to PR64 range. Gems are very rare.

This piece was formerly graded PR66 Ultra Cameo by NGC and it is not hard to see why as it is basically “as made” with no hairlines or signs of mishandling. As is not uncommon on Proofs of this date, there are some mint-made planchets and lintmarks with the most visible of the former seen on the obverse between the I and T in UNITED and beneath the second A in AMERICA and two of the latter on the reverse above and below the first L in DOLLAR. The contrast is extremely strong and the surfaces are vibrant and wholesome.

Only two PCGS graded 1860 Proof gold dollars with a Cameo designation have sold since 2007 and neither was graded 65. Heritage 1/12: 4711, graded PR66 but not designated as a Cameo but approved by CAC sold for $27,600.

This piece is likely in the Condition Census for the issue and it is the finest 1860 Proof gold dollar that I have handled.

CAC has approved four in this grade/designation with none finer. The population for Deep Cameo designation in this grade is one with none finer.
