The 1860-D is the second-to-last gold dollar struck at the Dahlonega mint. A total of1,566 were made of which fewer than 100 are known today. This issue is seen less often in high grades than the celebrated 1861-D as it was not saved and the PCGS MS62 which I sold in December 2012 as part of the Vasquez Rocks collection was the only finer example which I have sold in some time.

The strike is characteristic of the issue with almost no trace of the U in UNITED and some weakness on the 86 in the date. The rest of the details are mostly clear and around half of the denticles are distinct and show individual separation. The surfaces show only the lightest wear and are very lustrous with pleasing pale green-gold color. No marks merit description and the eye appeal is certainly above average for the date and grade.

Heritage 11/12: 4716, graded AU55 and approved by CAC., sold for $9,400. There have been no PCGS AU55 examples sold at auction since September 1999 (!) when a piece in the Goldberg sale held during that month brought a heady $14,375.

For most advanced collectors of Dahlonega gold dollars, this piece represents just about the best available quality for this rare and historically significant issue.

CAC has approved only two in this grade with five finer.
