Variety 12-P.

An estimated 100-125 1860-D dollars are known from a small coinage of just 1,566. This is a rare coin in properly graded AU and most pieces in NGC or PCGS slabs have been stripped and show no natural color as a result.

This coin has enough natural luster to suggest a 53 or even a 55 grade but it is softly struck, even by the lax standards of this poorly-made issue. The UN in UNITED are barely visible and the entire left border is weak; the 86 in the date is not well-formed. That said, this is still a wonderful coin, due to its lovely warm natural orange-gold color which changes to a subtle purple hue on the relief details. There is luster galore and the surfaces lack any of the typical detracting marks; mint-made or from commercial mishandling.

This exact coin is the only CAC approved NGC AU50 1860-D gold dollar to sell at auction; see below for pedigree information.

You’ll have to look long and hard to find a better 1860-D dollar at this price point.

CAC has approved three in this grade with eight finer.

Ex Heritage 12/12: 4716 where it realized $9,400.
