As with all 1859 dated gold issues from this mint, the gold dollar is a scarcer coin than its mintage would suggest. In MS60 to MS64, the 1859 is sometimes available but it is rare in Gem Uncirculated and very rare in MS66 and above. The finest known is the remarkable MS68+ owned by Dr. Steven Duckor; PCGS has graded four in MS67 of which this is the only coin available to specialists.

This superb coin has the sort of look which is seen only on “old-time” Gems which are typically only offered when fresh collections hit the market. It shows a razor sharp strike and lacks the clashmarks often seen on this issue. The color is a beautiful blend or rich lime, orange-gold and rose hues and with the exception of a tiny mint-made mark at the left corner of the bottom of the R in DOLLAR, the surfaces approach perfection. The Vasquez Rocks Collection, which I sold in late 2012/2013, contained a PCGS MS66+ with CAC approval.

There has never been a PCGS MS67 example of this date sold at auction. The last NGC MS67 (and the only one ever sold at auction) was ex Superior 1/04: 767 where it brought $8,338.

This coin is tied with a small number of others as the second finest business strike 1859 gold dollar and it represents unimprovable quality for the date and grade. An extremely important coin for the advanced gold dollar specialist.

CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
