This 1859 is similar in overall rarity to the 1858 but it is slightly less available in higher grades. That said, it is very scarce in Gem Uncirculated and any example grading MS66 or better is very rare. PCGS has graded four in MS67 and a single coin in MS68+ is almost certainly the finest known.

This lovely Gem example is notable for possessing some of the best color that I have seen on an 1859 gold dollar. Both the obverse and the reverse display a blend of vivid orange-gold, green and rose shades with slightly different configurations noted on either side. The strike is sharper than usually seen on the date and were it not for a few very small scuffs in the upper left obverse, this piece would have unquestionably graded MS67.

The last two MS66 examples of this date, both encapsulated by PCGS, were sold in 2011 and brought $5,463 and $5,175, respectively. The present example is the sole MS66+ to have been graded by PCGS.

If you collect Gem U.S. gold coins from the pre-Civil War era, you know how infrequently coins like this wonderful 1859 gold dollar are available.

CAC has approved three in MS66 and two finer (MS67). This is the only example graded MS66+ that has been approved.
