SUMTER COLLECTION

The 1858-S has the same mintage as the 1857-S (only 10,000 coins) but it is a bit less scarce. That said, properly graded AU55 to AU58 coins are scarce and this date is almost never seen in grades above MS60 MS61.

This is a highly lustrous slider with great eye appeal for the date and grade. It shows rich yellow-gold and rose color with a few splashes of deeper color in the obverse fields. There is very little in the way of actual wear and the strike is excellent. A few light scrapes in the left obverse field are not detracting.

Heritage 10/12: 5489, graded AU58 by PCGS and approved by CAC, sold for $2,585.

There are few coins in American numismatics which offer better value than Type Three gold dollars from the San Francisco mint and any of these issues in AU58 is a genuinely scarce coin.

CAC has approved five in this grade with three finer.
