The 1857-S is numismatically significant as the first Type Three gold dollar struck at the San Francisco mint. Of the 10,000 struck, around 125-150 are known with most in the EF45-AU53 range. Properly graded AU58 examples are very scarce and it is unlikely that more than 8-10 exist in Uncirculated.

This is only the second AU58 example of this date which I have offered in the last three years and I feel it is the better of this pair due to its conspicuous originality. The surfaces show attractive medium orange-gold and reddish hues and are lustrous. There is just the slightest amount of wear present and the strike is excellent. It is hard to imagine a nicer circulated 1857-S gold dollar exists!

As with all the gold dollars from this mint, higher grade 1857-S are very good value compared to Charlotte and Dahlonega issues.

CAC has approved six in AU58 with only two finer.

Ex Heritage 8/12: 4406 where it sold for $3,055.
