Only 10,000 examples were issued and the 1857-S is numismatically significant as the first Type Three gold dollar from the San Francisco mint. As a date, the 1857-S is seldom seen above AU50 to AU53 and properly graded AU58′s are very scarce and undervalued.

This lustrous slider shows nice rose color with just a few minor handling marks seen in the left obverse field. The strike is sharp for the issue with a full date and good clarity on the hair.

The only AU58 example with CAC approval to trade is ex Heritage 8/12: 4406, slabbed by PCGS, which sold for $3,055. Only two AU58′s, in total, have traded at auction in the last 2+ years.

The Type Three San Francisco gold dollars are highly collectible yet they remain very undervalued when compared to Charlotte and Dahlonega issues of this era.

CAC has approved five in this grade with just one finer (MS61 finest).
