The 1857-C is one of just two Type Three gold dollars from the Charlotte mint. It is less rare than the 1859-C but it is actually more difficult to locate in higher grades, especially with natural color and surfaces.

This is among the most cosmetically appealing examples of this date I have owned and it shows very deep, totally natural green-gold color on the obverse and reverse. It has a better than average strike with nearly full denticles seen on both sides and a bold date. There are a few very light hairlines on the obverse but this piece has the appearance and appeal of an AU58.

Only two PCGS AU55 examples of this date have sold at auction since 2008 and the last to hit the block was Great Collection 4/13: 86585, not approved by CAC, at $4,950.

This is an exceptionally appealing 1857-C gold dollar and it is perfect for the type or date collector who has been waiting for the right example to come along.

This is the only 1857-C gold dollar in AU55 to be approved by CAC; three finer have been approved as well.
