Only two Type Three gold dollars were produced at the Charlotte mint: the 1857-C and the 1859-C. The 1857-C is the more common of the two from the standpoint of overall rarity but it is far scarcer in higher grades than its counterpart. A properly graded AU55 to AU58 with natural color and appealing surfaces is far above average for this undervalued issue.

Nearly all 1857-C dollars were struck on inferior planchets with problematic dies and this coin is no exception. The surfaces are actually nicer than average and there is not much in the way of mint-made roughness in the fields. The details are above average as well with some feathers showing and a sharp, clean date. The color is a pleasing natural medium green-gold and a bit of luster can be seen as well. The overall eye appeal is nice for the date and grade.

Only two PCGS AU55 examples of this date have sold at auction since the beginning of 2008. The last one brought $4,950 in Great Collection’s 4/13 sale.

At less than $4,000, I think this coin represents extremely good value for the quality-conscious gold dollar collector or Charlotte coin specialist.
