Only two Type Three gold dollars were made at the Charlotte mint: the 1857-C and the 1859-C. The former is the more available overall but it is scarcer in high grades than its counterpart. The 1857-C has the dubious distinction of being among the worst struck of all Southern branch mint gold issues.

While weak at the rims, the central details on this example are better detailed than usual and the quality of the planchet is better than usual as well. Both sides are lustrous and show light green-gold hues with some contrasting darker color at the borders.

The last two PCGS AU50 1857-C gold dollars to sell at auction brought $2,585 and $2,820, respectively, in 2014.

A pleasing yet affordable 1857-C dollar.
