There are just two Type Three gold dollars from the Charlotte mint: the 1857-C and the 1859-C. The former is the more common of the two in terms of overall rarity but it is actually quite a bit scarcer in high grades, In fact, the 1857-C is very rare in properly graded AU58 and exceedingly rare in Uncirculated with just three to five known.

This is among the nicest 1857-C gold dollars that I have seen or handled and this is saying something as there are not many higher grade Charlotte gold dollars that haven’t passed through my hands in three decades of specializing in Charlotte coinage. It is very well made and lustrous with almost none of the planchet roughness that is found on the majority of the surviving population. Both sides show lovely natural mellow gold color and there is a good degree of luster remaining. This is not an issue that is widely known for having good eye appeal but this example is really pleasing.

A single CAC approved 1857-C gold dollar graded AU58 has appeared at auction and it sold for $6,463 as Stacks Bowers 3/14: 6164; it was graded by PCGS. The only significantly finer 1857-C dollar that I have handled in many years was Heritage 2/08: 2335, graded MS61 by NGC, that I purchased for $12,650.

If you collect Charlotte gold dollars, you will recognize the importance of this offering!

This is one of just three examples approved by CAC in this grade with none finer.
