The 1856-S is an important standalone issue as it is the only Type Two gold dollar from San Francisco and the only issue of this type produced in 1856. It is not a really rare date but it is very popular with multiple levels of demand. In the mid-range AU grades, it is difficult to locate with natural color.

This choice, original example shows deep, even russet hues on the obverse and the reverse. It has the skin and sharpness of an AU55 but there are a few modest marks seen in the obverse fields which limit the grade.

Only two PCGS AU53 examples with CAC approval have sold since September 2011 and they appear to be the same coin. One record was for $2,938 in July 2013 while the other was for $3,163 in November, 2011.

Am affordable yet above-average example of this numismatically significant issue.

CAC has approved two in this grade with 21 finer.
