With a mintage of just 1,460, the 1856-D has the fourth lowest figure for the entire denomination, trailing the 1849-C (unknown), 1861-D (less than 1,000) and the 1875 (400). It is the fourth rarest goldd dollar from the Dahlonega mint after the 1861-D, 1855-D and the 1860-D. It is usually seen in the EF40 to AU50 range and it is rare in AU58. Only six or seven exist in Uncirculated with the finest of these in the MS62 to MS63 range.

This lustrous light yellow gold example is well made for the issue but it does show some minting peculiarities associated with all 1856-D dollars. The U in UNITED is almost indistinct but the rest of the obverse is surprisingly sharp; the reverse is well detailed and it shows raised die finishing lines at the right border as made. Some clashmarks at the centers are also as struck and should not be misidentified as damage.

There are five auction records for AU58 examples of this date since May 2009 with a low of $11,500 and a high of $14,463.

With Uncirculated examples of the 1856-D gold dollar being all but unobtainable given their rarity and level of demand, this is essentially the finest available quality for the issue. An important Southern gold coin.
