Variety 8-K.

It is likely that fewer than 100 are known from an original mintage of just 1,460. All were struck from a single pair of dies in May, 1856 and this is a numismatically significant issue as the first Type Three dollar from Dahlonega.

This piece is well-detailed for the issue with most of the details up and bold; an exception is the U in UNITED which is weak as always. The date and mintmark are strong and the centers are sharp. The color is a choice natural medium russet which is a welcome exception to the bright, lifeless appearance seen on most 1856-D dollars.

Only two AU53 1856-D gold dollars have sold at auction since May 2009. The last, a PCGS coin with questionable color, realized $8,050 as Heritage 1/10: 3794 while a nicer piece also graded by PCGS brought $10,350 in May 2009.

It is very hard to find a non-damaged 1856-D dollar for less than $10,000 with real eye appeal and a good overall appearance. This nice piece checks all these boxes and more.
