This is yet another numismatically significant issue as it is the only Type Two gold dollar from New Orleans. It isn’t the rarest date from this mint (that honor belongs to the 1850-O, an example of which, in PCGS MS62, is listed above) but it is clearly the most popular. I believe that there are four to five dozen 1855-O dollars in Uncirculated and this date becomes very scarce in MS62, rare in MS63 and very rare in MS64.

This is a wholesome, original example which is well struck and very clean for the grade. There is some attractive green-gold and orange hues seen on both sides and the luster is, as usual, a bit on the subdued side. A cluster of small marks in the upper left field do not detract and this coin has very good overall eye appeal.

Since 1999, there have been only three PCGS MS61 examples that have sold at auction. The last of these was Heritage 3/09: 2528, which realized $7,475.

This is the best available quality for this date at less than $10,000 and I feel that the “sweet spot” for value is in the MS61 grade.

CAC has approved three in this grade with four finer.
