Due to its status as a one-year type, the 1855-O is by far the most popular gold dollar from the New Orleans mint. It is harder to find in properly graded AU58 than the population figures would suggest as most are three to five points overgraded.

This is a delightful “slider” with a considerable amount of mint luster below rich natural green-gold and orange hues. The strike is slightly better than normal for the date and the surfaces are clean with just a few minor scuffs in the fields. This coin probably saw little–if any circulation–and it has far better eye appeal than most which I have seen graded AU58.

The last PCGS AU58 example of this date sold for $5,225 as Great Collections 4/13: 112016. The only PCGS AU58 with CAC approval to sell in recent years was Heritage 8/12: 4401, which brought a strong $7,638.

If you can find one, a PCGS MS60 to MS61 1855-O gold dollar with CAC approval will cost in excess of $10,000. In my opinion, this pleasing slider is a better value at slightly ore than half this amount.

CAC has approved 18 in this grade with seven finer.
