This numismatically significant issue is the only Type Two gold dollar from the Charlotte mint. Only 9,803 were made and survivors, which number around 300-350, tend to be in the EF40 to AU50 grade range. In high grades, the 1855-C is the second rarest gold dollar from this mint after the basically uncollectable 1849-C Open Wreath and it is exceedingly rare in full Uncirculated. Despite a reasonably high population of MS60 and MS61 coins at NGC, I believe that only three or four properly graded Uncirculated pieces exist.

As with most 1855-C dollars, this piece was struck on a rough, somewhat irregular planchet and the NGC grade is assigned mostly due to the luster present. This piece seems to have little in the way of wear and it shows a few areas of die swelling on the obverse that shouldn’t be confused with bends in the planchet.

Since the beginning of 2008, there have been 10 auction appearances of this issue in NGC AU58. The prices realized have ranged from a low of $13,325 to a high of $21,850 with most in the range of $14,000 to $16,000.
