The 1855-C is the only Type Two gold dollar from the Charlotte mint. Of the four one-year issue branch mint gold dollars of this design, the 1855-C is the second scarcest, after the 1855-D. Of the 9,803 struck, only a few dozen exist in AU grades and the 1855-C becomes very rare in MS60 or finer.

While seemingly available in AU50, the 1855-C is actually rare as most of the coins which have been graded as such are very underwhelming. This piece is original and choice with nice medium green-gold color and very clean surfaces. The centers are weak from strike and were the detail a bit shaper, this piece would grade higher. Still, it is very appealing for an AU50 and better than many I have seen in AU53 and even AU55 holders.

The last PCGS AU50 example of this date to sell at auction was a low end piece that brought $6,900 in Stacks Bowers 2011 ANA auction. Before this, there were records of $8,395, $8,625 and $8,625 in 2006.

The 1855-C is the most popular gold dollar from this mint due to its one-year issuance and only a handful of examples will ever be choice enough to be approved by CAC.

CAC has approved two in this grade with three finer.
