The 1854-D is the last of six Type One gold dollars from the Dahlonega mint. Only 2,935 were struck and an estimated 100-125 exist with most in the EF45-AU53 range. Properly graded AU58s are very scarce and only seven to ten are known in Uncirculated, mostly in MS60 and MS61.

This very clean frosty example has light yellow-gold and pale rose shadings on both sides. The strike is typical for the issue with weakness seen at the centers while the borders show some degree of definition. The large raised die scratches on the reverse (to the left of the mintmark) are diagnostic. This is a very early die state with almost no clashmarks seen at the obverse and this greatly adds to the overall eye appeal.

Only one PCGS AU58 has sold at auction since the beginning of 2008 and it realized $6,463 as Heritage 1/14: 6367.

This is the first PCGS AU58 example of this date I have offered for sale in many years and it is choicer than others I have seen in MS61 holders.
