Even though it is the most common gold dollar from this mint, the 1853-O is a scarce coin in Gem Uncirculated and in this lofty grade it is, needless to say, extremely rare. In MS66, the 1853-O dollar is the essence of a condition rarity.

Unless you see this coin in person, it is hard to fathom how well struck it is and how sharp the fine details are on the hair and the wreath. Both sides have a fine, grainy texture with rich orange-gold and greenish colors. There is a very shallow mint-made planchet flaw on the obverse behind the top of Liberty’s head and a small toning spot between the 1 and the 3 in the date. Otherwise, this coin is virtually unmarked.

There has never been an 1853-O gold dollar finer than MS65 sold at auction. The finest known is an NGC MS67 which I sold twice via private treaty, once in 2005 and again in 2008. To the best of my knowledge, the current example is the second finest known and it is certainly the single finest New Orleans gold dollar of any date to be made available in many years.

If you are putting together the ultimate set of New Orleans gold or if you are working on a world-class set of gold dollars, this is the 1853-O that you have been waiting for!
