The 1853-O is the most available gold dollar from the New Orleans mint. It is not often seen in properly graded MS64 and Gems are both rare and expensive. As a type coin, a higher grade example of this issue makes sense as it tends to be well made and attractive.

This sharply detailed borderline Gem is notable for its undisturbed frosty mint luster and its attractive rich natural yellow-gold color. A few light marks in the left obverse field and at the top of the central reverse keep this attractive coin away from an otherwise-deserved Gem grade.

No CAC approved MS64 1853-O gold dollars have sold at auction. An NGC MS64 recently realized $3,525 as Heritage 6/15: 5152.

If available, a PCGS/CAC MS65 example of this date would cost in excess of $10,000.

CAC has approved six in this grade with four finer.
