The 1853-D is the second most common Type Two gold dollar from this mint but it is many times acarcer than the 1849-D. Despite this fact, it is not priced at a much greater level than the 49-D and it is excellent value for the type collector, in my opinion.

This is a pleasing “slider” with very minimal wear and nice natural medium orange-gold color which deepens to a reddish hue at the central reverse. A good amount of luster remains on both sides and the only describable fault is a small scuff in the inner left obverse field near the chin.

There were just two NGC AU58 1853-D gold dollars sold at auction in 2012 and they brought $4,113 and $4,025, respectively. Neither was approved by CAC.

This is a perfect coin for the collector who would like to own a single high quality Dahloenga gold dollar but whose budget precludes an expensive Mint State example.

CAC has approved six in this grade with just one finer.
