Only five Type One gold dollars were made at the Charlotte mint. The 1853-C is the second most available of these but it is three or four times harder to find than the 1851-C. The 1853-C is very scarce in Uncirculated and in properly graded MS62 it is quite rare.

This deeply toned example shows choice natural russet hues in slightly different configurations on the obverse and the reverse. There are a few scuffs in the fields but this is a solid coin for the grade with good detail and a much more original appearance than usual.

The last PCGS MS62 to sell at auction was Heritage 9/13: 6698 at $5,875. Only two PCGS coins in this grade have been auctioned since 2008.

The 1853-C is almost never seen in grades above MS62, especially in PCGS holders; this service has graded only five finer than this.
