The 1852-O s the second scarcest gold dollar from this mint after the 1850-O. In Uncirculated, it becomes scarce in properly graded MS62 and it is rare in MS63. In Gem, it is extremely rare with just three or four known. There are two PCGS MS65 as well as an NGC MS66 which I purchased for $23,000 in the Heritage 7/05 sale.

This fresh-to-the-market Gem is one of the two finest 1852-O gold dollars I have personally seen or sold. It is sharply struck and very frosty with lovely rich natural orange-gold color, in slightly different configurations, on the obverse and reverse. There are a few light scuffs in the left obverse field while the reverse is superb. The 5 in the date is weakly impressed as is common for the issue.

No MS65 example of this date has ever appeared at auction and the other two Gems I am aware of are off the market in tightly-held collections.

An extremely important New Orleans gold dollar for the highly advanced collector.
