COLLECTOR GRADE 1852-D GOLD DOLLAR

Variety 4-E, late die state with heavy obverse clashmarks and reverse breaks.

The 1852-D is considerably scarcer than the 1849-D and 1851-D gold dollars yet it sells for just a small premium in collector grade, making it an excellent choice for type purposes. It is only moderately scarce in the lower AU grades but most seen in 50 and 53 holders are not choice.

This medium russet gold example has enough luster and original skin to qualify at a higher grade level but it is a hard coin to properly grade on account of mint-made roughness on the obverse due to multiple clashmarks. There are a few shallow old scratches on the obverse which limit the grade but the appearance is excellent for the date.

Only one PCGS AU50 1852-D gold dollar has sold at auction since 2003 and it realized $2,530 as Scotsman 7/13: 1050. The last PCGS AU53 to cross the block realized $2,820 as Stacks Bowers 8/12: 12177.

This the best available quality for this date at under $2,500 and it makes an interesting alternative to the ubiquitous 1849-D as an affordable Type One type coin from this mint.
