Housed in an old “fatty” holder, Variety 2 with repunched base of the 1 in the date.

The 1852-C is one of the two most common gold dollars from this mint but it is many times harder to locate than its counterpart the 1851-C. Most 1852-C dollars are seen in EF45-AU53 grades and nice high end AU’s with natural color and surfaces are not easy to locate.

This lustrous example offers strong claims to MS61 status and it seems more “new” than most newer-graded pieces in 61 holders. The obverse shows a splash of attractive reddish color at the top and the right field while the reverse is a lighter even yellow-gold. This is an early die state without the mint-made strikethrough seen at the central reverse on most from this die pair.

Surprisingly, only one AU58 has sold at auction in over seven years and it was a low-end non-CAC NGC coin which still brought $2,820 as Heritage 4/13: 5312.

This is the best available quality for this date at under $4,000 and it would make a great type coin for a collector seeking a single choice Type One dollar from the Charlotte mint.

CAC has approved seven in this grade with five finer.
