Variety 3-E. If you like your Dahlonega gold dollars “dark and dirty” then you are going to really like this example as it has extremely crusty surfaces that are overlaid with dirt. The coloration on both sides is a blend of deep greens and yellows and a good amount of luster is present. The strike is a bit soft and this seems to be what kept PCGS from grading the coin at a higher level; I have certainly seen far inferior examples in 53 or even 55 holders. The 1851-D is the second most available Type One dollar from this mint but it is many times scarcer than the 1849-D.
