The 1851-C is by far the most available Charlotte gold dollar. There are dozens known in Uncirculated but nearly all of these grade MS63 or below. This date is rare in properly graded MS64 and very rare in MS65. There are two known in MS66 and one of these sold in February 1999 for $31,050.

This wonderful Gem shows rich natural yellow gold color with some peripheral shadings to a deeper orange-gold. The strike is sharp save for some minor weakness at the reverse center at the A in DOLLAR; the date and mintmark are full. There are a few small scuffs in the left obverse field and at the central reverse. What looks like a long scratch at the right obverse is, in fact, a mint-made die scratch which can be seen on most higher grade 1851-C gold dollars.

Only two PCGS MS65 1851-C dollars have sold at auction since 2000. One brought $23,000 as Heritage 2008 ANA: 1869 while the other realized $18,400 as Heritage 6/04: 6162.

I have handled only two other Gem 1851-C gold dollars in three decades of specializing in Southern gold coinage and this piece would make a wonderful addition to a world-class set of Charlotte coinage.
