Variety 1.

The 1849-D is far and away the most available gold dollar from the Dahlonega mint. It is numismatically significant as the first-year-of-issue and it is always in strong demand as a type coin. It is common in circulated grades and seen from time to time in the lowest Uncirculated grades but it is scarce in properly graded MS62 and rare above this.

This is a really impressive example which is well struck and frosty with an especially nice obverse. The surfaces are clean for the date and grade with just a few little marks on the reverse to the right of the 1 in the denomination. Both sides are vibrant with rich rose and green-gold color which is “right” for the issue.

Just two PCGS MS62′s have crossed the auction block since the Spring of 2013 and the last of these was a CAC approved example which realized $8,225 as Stacks Bowers 2015 ANA: 1160.

This date is always in demand and I haven’t handled a significantly nicer 1849-D dollar in some time.
