The 1849-D is numismatically significant as the first gold dollar made at the Dahlonega mint. It is by far the most available of the 13 gold dollars from this facility and it can be found in most circulated grades with no problems. Locating choice pieces with original color and surfaces is another matter and it has become hard to find pleasing examples in the AU grades.

This very deeply toned example has rich green-gold color with splashes of reddish gold in the left obverse and at the central reverse. It is possible that this coin was either stored in a leather pouch or in an old cabinet which accounts for this deep natural color. The strike is sharp, the surfaces are immaculate and the eye appeal, while not for everyone, is exceptional in my opinion.

Only three PCGS AU55 examples of the 1849-D dollar have sold at auction since the end of 2009. The last was a CAC approved piece, offered as DLRC 9/13:188, which sold for $3,525.

If you have always wanted to own a high quality piece of Dahlonega gold but your budget was under $4,000, this coin is ideal.
