Closed Wreath variety.

The 1849-C is numismatically significant as the first gold dollar made at the Charlotte mint and its counterpart, the exceedingly rare Open Wreath has a surviving population of just four or five coins. There are around 125-150 Closed Wreath 1849-C dollars and this issue is very scarce in properly graded AU58, especially with natural color and choice surfaces.

This gem slider has the typically seen convex obverse married to a concave reverse and this has resulted in glittering prooflike surfaces on the front of the coin. Both sides are clean and lightly worn with leasing natural medium green-gold color. Some weakness at the central obverse is mint-made and should not be confused with wear. The eye appeal is excellent and I have seen inferior examples in MS61 holders.

Only three PCGS AU58′s, including this coin (see below) have sold at auction since the end of 2009/ The only PCGS AU58 with CAC approval to sell at auction was Goldberg 1/12: 1060 which brought a very strong $10,206.

An exceptional coin for the gold dollar collector who wants a truly nice 1849-C Closed Wreath.

Ex Heritage 9/12: 4743 (without CAC approval) where it realized $6,463.

CAC has approved four in AU58 with four finer.
