NICE SLIDER 1849-C CLOSED WREATH GOLD DOLLAR

The 1849-C Closed Wreath is numismatically significant as the first collectible gold dollar from the Charlotte mint. About 250-350 are known from an original mintage of just 11,634 pieces and most are in the EF45 to AU55 range. Properly graded AU58′s are scarce and are a sensible alternative to an expensive–and rare–Uncirculated piece.

This fresh to the market gem slider has the appearance of an MS62 or finer example. It is well struck and frosty with bright yellow-gold hues on the obverse and the reverse. There are a few marks seen in the left obverse with one small dig near the star at 8:00 the only thing worth describing.

Four PCGS AU58 1849-C Closed Wreath gold dollars have sold at auction since the beginning of 2008. The prices realized have ranged from a low of $6,463 (9/12) to a high of $10,206 (2/12); the only one which had CAC approval was the coin which brought the most money.

It would be hard to find a nicer 1849-C CW dollar without spending at least $10,000, if not more.
