The 1844-C is one of the rarest Charlotte half eagles from the standpoint of overall availability. I almost never see this date in “collector grades” and the few EF’s that tend to come to market lack original color and have poor strikes.

This is one of the nicest EF examples of this date that I can recall having seen. It shows nice medium green-gold color with some russet shadings at the edges. There is a good deal of luster for the grade and the fields lack the usual scuffs; an old vertical scrape on the cheek of Liberty limits the grade.

The last PCGS EF45 example to sell at auction was ex Goldberg 2/12: 1503 which brought $2,990. This coin was not approved by CAC.

For the date collector, this is an important opportunity as an only slightly better AU examples of the 1844-C, if available, is likely to cost over $4,000-5,000.

CAC has approved two in this grade with six finer.
