As with the similarly-dated half eagle of this year, the 1875-S quarter eagle is a coin which is overlooked despite a low mintage figure. Just 11,600 quarter eagles were made this year and the 1875-S has long been in demand among date collectors given the rarity of the 1875-P. The 1875-S is very scarce in Mint State and it is very rare in MS63 with just three or four pieces known to me, including at least one which is horribly recolored.

This is the finest 1875-S I have owned and it is a choice coin for the grade with a sharp strike, nice natural rose and green-gold color and a wholesome, natural appearance. A group of small marks in the right obverse field narrowly remove this from consideration at a higher grade.

The last APR for a PCGS MS63 1875-S quarter eagle is ex Stack’s 2/08: 2045 which brought $6,325 in a market less appreciable of coins like this than in current conditions.

This is the single finest piece approved by CAC and it deserves to reside in a world-class collection of Liberty Head quarter eagles.

CAC has approved one in this grade with none finer.
