The 1854-S is numismatically significant as the first double eagle from the new San Francisco mint. It is far rarer than it appears as nearly every known example in AU55 and above is a shipwreck coin, mostly from the Yankee Blade. Unfortunately, either PCGS or NGC differentiates original surface coins from those with matter surfaces. The former are very rare in AU58 and I know of just two or three in Uncirculated.

This is one of the finest non-shipwreck 1854-S double eagles that I have handled. It is a gem slider with the appearance of an MS61 but just the slightest amount of friction is noted on the relief details. The color is an appealing light rose-gold and orange while the surfaces are frosty with an absence of significant marks.

Around a year ago, I sold an NGC AU58+/CAC example of this date with original surfaces and this was the finest I had seen or sold in a number of years.

An extremely important coin for the sophisticated Type One double eagle collector.
