SCARCE AND POPULAR 1840-C HALF EAGLE GRADED AU50 BY PCGS

Variety 1.

The 1840-C is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for the Liberty Head half eagle with the mintmark on the reverse. It is among the scarcest half eagles from Charlotte with an estimated 150 or so known from a mintage of 18,992. This date is not often seen in the AU grade range and when available, such coins are usually bright, shiny and abraded.

This piece shows very deep natural green-gold color which is "right" for circulated 1840-C half eagles. It shows some typical weakness of strike at the centers and the first four stars are flat at the radials. The surfaces are very clean save for a thin scratch on the reverse which runs from the mintmark.

A PCGS AU50 1840-C half eagle sold for $4,700 as Heritage 2015 ANA: 6164 and this was the only PCGS coin sold in this grade since January 2011.
