RARE UNCIRCULATED 1843-O LARGE DATE QUARTER EAGLE

Large Date variety; as noted by PCGS.

In terms of overall rarity, the 1843-O Large Date is the third rarest quarter eagle from New Orleans, trailing the 1845-O and 1842-O. There are around a dozen or so known in Uncirculated with most in the MS60 to MS62 range. Given how similar most of these are, I'm guessing a small hoard existed at one time.

This fresh-to-the-market example is unquestionably "new" with no ear noted on the high spots. As usual, the portrait shows raised die rust bumps and there is some weakness seen at the centers. Both sides are frosty and have attractive natural yellow-gold color. A few small ticks in the left obverse field limit the grade.

The last two APR's for this date in PCGS MS61 are $5,875 in June 2015 and $6,500 in August 2014.

The last PCGS MS62 1843-O Large Date sold at auction for $15,275 (in early 2014) which means that for most collectors, this nice PCGS MS61 makes considerably more sense.
