RARE CHOICE AU 1841-D QUARTER EAGLE WITH CAC APPROVAL

Variety 2-C, perfect dies.

The 1841-D is one of the really scarce issues in the Dahlonega quarter eagle series. Around 100 or so are known with most in the VF-EF range and properly graded AU55′s are rare. In Uncirculated, I am aware of just three unquestionably Uncirculated pieces: the Green Pond coin (PCGS 63), the Duke’s Creek coin (NGC MS63) and the Pittman coin (NGC MS61).

Unlike nearly every known 1841-D quarter eagle in the middle AU grades, this piece is uncleaned with natural rich russet hues seen on the obverse and the reverse. The strike is razor sharp with uncommonly bold central details while the surfaces lack any detracting marks. A spot of dirt can be seen at star five which could be removed but I think it adds character.

There are four auction records for 1841-D quarter eagles in AU55 since early 2010 ranging from a low of $7,475 to a high of $8,631.

This is the best available quality for the date at under $10,000 and it is likely in the tail end of the Condition Census.

CAC has approved one in this grade with just one finer (58).
