Variety 1.

The 1840-C is numismatically significant as the first Liberty Head quarter eagle from the Charlotte mint. It is reasonably scarce in all grades and those which remain in collector grades (VF and EF) tend to be bright from repeated cleanings.

This fresh to the market example is characterized by deep natural green-gold color which is the absolute correct hue for this issue. The obverse shows exceptional detail with nearly full radial lines in the stars while the reverse is sharper at the center than normal. Both sides show old dirt which has collected in the recesses and the fields lack any significant marks.

Three PCGS EF45 1840-C quarter eagles sold at auction between January 2006 and February 2012 and they realized $2,875, $2,990 and $2,990, respectively.

This is a great coin for the collector working on a set of Charlotte quarter eagles in affordable grades.
