The 1840-C is numismatically significant as the first year of issue for Liberty Head quarter eagles from this mint. The 1840-C is a moderately scarce issue which becomes rare in properly graded AU58 and which is very rare in Uncirculated with fewer than ten believed to exist. Most of the AU58 example I have seen are not choice for the grade with brightened surfaces and an artificial appearance.

This lightly worn slider is characterized by fiery reddish-gold color at the borders and this is more noticeable on the obverse. The luster is mostly intact while the surfaces are clean and lustrous. The strike is uncommonly bold for the issue with nearly full detail seen at the centers. This is a great looking coin with more eye appeal than most Charlotte quarter eagles in MS60 or MS61 holders.

A PCGS AU58 brought $7,638 as Stacks Bowers 2/14: 3105. Only four PCGS AU58′s have sold at auction since 1999.

Uncirculated examples of this date are out of reach for many collectors, making this choice AU58 an excellent choice.

CAC has approved two in this grade with none finer.
