Variety 1.

The 1840-C is numismatically significant as the first Liberty Head quarter eagle from this mint. It is not a rare date in the AU grades but nearly all the slabbed examples that I have seen are low end and have negative eye appeal.

This fresh, lightly worn example is not fully struck on the obverse border; otherwise it would likely have graded AU58. It is lustrous and has nice natural yellow-gold coloration on both sides. There is some mint-made planchet roughness on the obverse from the border at 7:00 to the chin.

The last PCGS AU55 example of this date to sell at auction realized $4,025 as Heritage 4/15: 4465. A non-CAC NGC AU55 realized $4,465 as Heritage 4/15: 6066.

This is just about the best available quality for this date and it would make a nice addition to a higher end Charlotte quarter eagle set.

CAC has approved two in this grade with three finer.
