The short-lived Classic Head quarter eagle series contains no real rarities but the 1839 is probably the scarcest single issue, at least in terms of overall rarity. It is highly undervalued in all grades and it is actually seen less often in AU than the far more expensive 1838-C and 1839-D. Most 1839′s are in the EF40 to AU50 range and middle-level AU’s with natural color and surfaces are extremely hard to locate.

This is one of the few 1839 quarter eagle I’ve seen in some time that is not bright and heavily abraded. The color is a pleasing natural medium russet with some greenish overtones. There are some marks visible in the left obverse field including a vertical scratch from the right of star two up to the nose. Both sides have natural mint luster and the strike is very acceptable for the issue.

There have been no PCGS AU53 1839 quarter eagles sold at auction since July 2002. Heritage 4/12: 6365, graded AU53 by NGC, sold for $3,105 and was nowhere near as attractive as the present piece.

As Classic Head gold becomes more and more popular, it is likely that demand for this scarce issue will increase and that prices will rise accordingly.
